Calculating Your Commute Costs
Whether you are driving from Brampton to downtown Toronto or planning a road trip to Montreal, fuel is a major expense. Knowing your exact cost per trip helps you budget better or decide if taking the GO Train is cheaper.
How to Calculate Fuel Cost
The formula to calculate the gas cost of a trip is:
Cost = (Distance รท 100) ร Efficiency ร Price
Example: If you drive 50km, your car uses 10L/100km, and gas is $1.50/L:
- Fuel Used: (50 / 100) ร 10 = 5 Litres
- Cost: 5 Litres ร $1.50 = $7.50
Tips to Save on Gas
- Check Tire Pressure: Under-inflated tires increase fuel consumption by up to 3%.
- Use Cruise Control: Consistent speed on the 401/407 highways saves fuel.
- Remove Excess Weight: Don't drive with heavy items in the trunk if you don't need them.
