Understanding Land Transfer Tax
In Ontario, you pay LTT every time you buy land or an interest in land. It is calculated on a sliding scale based on the purchase price.
The "Toronto Tax"
If you buy in the City of Toronto, you unfortunately pay a second Municipal Land Transfer Tax (MLTT) on top of the provincial one. Buyers in Brampton, Mississauga, and Markham do not pay this extra tax.
First-Time Buyer Rebate
If you have never owned a home anywhere in the world, you are eligible for a rebate of up to $4,000 off the provincial tax (and another $4,475 off the Toronto tax).
