The Discount Formula
To calculate a discount manually, convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply it by the original price.
Savings = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)
Final Price = Original Price - Savings
Final Price = Original Price - Savings
Example: A $100 jacket with 20% off.
$100 × 0.20 = $20 Savings.
$100 - $20 = $80 Final Price.
Don't Forget the Tax!
In Ontario, remember to add 13% HST after the discount is applied. In Alberta, add 5% GST. Retailers always calculate tax on the final sale price, not the original sticker price.
