How to Calculate Fractions

Fractions represent parts of a whole. A fraction has a Numerator (top number) and a Denominator (bottom number).

Adding & Subtracting

To add fractions, you must find a common denominator. For example, to add 1/2 + 1/4, you change 1/2 to 2/4. Then you can add the tops: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.

Multiplying Fractions

This is the easiest operation. Simply multiply the tops together and the bottoms together.

(1/2) ร— (3/4) = (1ร—3) / (2ร—4) = 3/8

Dividing Fractions

Use the "Flip and Multiply" method. To divide by a fraction, flip it upside down (reciprocal) and multiply instead.

(1/2) รท (1/4) = (1/2) ร— (4/1) = 4/2 = 2
